This Normal Life

A few months ago, one of my sisters asked me a question nonchalantly on Skype that recently inspired me to finally update our blog. She asked if we were excited to move back to the U.S. and get back to our normal life in Alaska. I had to laugh. Normal? This place — Costa Rica, La Rambla — is normal. It was an interesting question that led me to ponder another: What exactly is normal? And how long does one have to live in a certain place to achieve normalcy? In Alaska, normal was walking out our cabin door to find a moose sleeping next to the car. Here normal is finding a snake in our house, killing cockroaches daily and accidentally flooding our own apartment. As strange as it may seem, the stories we’ve accumulated lately have become part of normal life around here. So normal, actually, that they didn’t initially seem interesting enough to blog about, but we realize now that some of the things we’ve grown accustomed to may actually seem a little… well… exotic to people bac...
